Carly loves to share the joy of sport and physical activity through coaching. As a coach, she believes her primary role is to assist athletes and exercisers by giving them the tools they need to reach their goals. For some, these goals might involve reaching a certain performance criteria while for others the goal might simply be to enjoy working out, becoming healthier, or finishing a race with a smile.
Over the years, Carly has coached both developmental or beginner athletes as well as high performance athletes of all ages. She has over 20 years of coaching experience including coaching the National Paratriathlon team, for Swim Saskatchewan High Performance team, for Saskatoon’s Youth/Junior Triathlon teams, coaching at various triathlon skills clinics throughout Saskatchewan (youth, junior & age-group athletes), for Saskatoon Lasers Swim Club, Huskies Cross Country Camps, at Saskatoon’s Kids of Steel clinics and events, for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, and as the instructor of the U of S College of Kinesiology’s Track and Field class. In 2010 and 2011 she was selected by Triathlon Canada as head coach for the Paratriathlon World Championships training camps and races in Budapest, Hungary and Beijing, China. She is a Triathlon Canada “Coach Developer” who teaches and certifies other coaches and has previously served on the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association board as Director of Coaching.
Carly also works with individuals and groups who are not interested in sport but are trying to make physical activity part of their lifestyle. She teaches Pilates & Strength classes. Read more about these options in Fitness & Cross Training.
In addition to coaching, Carly is a faculty member in a Lecturer position in the College of Kinesiology at the U of S. She continues to participate in sport herself. She speed swam in her youth. During her years as an undergraduate student, she ran cross country and track and field with the U of S Huskies. She has raced at least one triathlon a year for over 20 years and has competed in numerous local and international triathlons including Junior Nationals (2004) and Age Group World Triathlon Championships in Switzerland (2006), Germany (2007), Vancouver (2008), New Zealand (2012), Edmonton (2014), and Montreal (2022) and qualified for other locations like Ibiza, Netherlands, and Malaga, Spain. She has placed first overall at many local races and her best international placing to date is 7th in her age group in Hamburg, Germany 2007 Age Group World Championships. One of her racing “career” highlights was being selected as one of five female members on Team Canada at FISU University Triathlon World Championships in 2008 in Erdek, Turkey. She has competed in both short and longer distance events (e.g., marathons, 70.3) as well as aquathlons and other multi-sport events. In 2009, she was named Triathlon Saskatchewan’s Female Triathlete of the Year and in 2017 was named Triathlon Saskatchewan’s Coach of the Year (2016).
She currently balances coaching and a lighter approach to her training with life as a mom of four energetic kids (including twin toddlers). Life has come full circle as her coaching athletes with disability now applies to her personal life as one of her children lives with disability. She advocates for inclusive programming and is especially proud of Transition Sport & Fitness offerings such as Family Fitness and adult/youth options that allow families and multiple generations to be active together.
